Picking this one up as well. It should be a lot easier than Kanon. The thing I'm worried about most with this one is screen effects. It's going to require some testing but I think I might release a full episode 1 for people to test after I get up to a certain point. Let's say the first twilight since that should be enough to test a bit of the commands. Otherwise it'd take a while for me to release something major since I'm a pretty slow reader.
This small demo is the opening of episode 1 and goes up until where the OP movie plays. I am not affiliated with Witch Hunt in any way but I will deal with misc errors like typos if people report them here. I know the script is littered with them so you'll not only be helping out the DS port by reporting errors but also the PC translation.

Thanks, fixed that up. :)
I seem to have run into a problem. From my testing it appears to be the middle sprite causing the problem. Switching the order the sprites are displayed fixes it also. Instead of left, center, right; center, left, right works. Also removing the middle sprite fixes it but removing the right sprite does not. Here's the code for that section but nothing seems wrong with it from what I can tell.

Maybe you're going over the maximum size for sprites (256x192)?
Code seems fine.
>>4
Resolution seems fine for all 3 images. I had this same problem occur a little later with 3 different sprites too. Seems to only happen with the left sprite.
Sorry for the double post but I decided to give it a go in r119. It's working perfectly there.
>>6
Then it's probably the image cache not leaving enough memory for the drawing code. (I'll run some tests later)
Bug has been fixed, expect a new release soon.
As I said in the first post, I am a slow reader but would upload Episode 1 after I reached the first twilight. I've finally reached that point and it seems to be playing well.
Some things to look out for:
Graphic effects where they shouldn't be (rain mostly)
Abnormally long delay timers
Off center character sprites
Broken images (if you constantly get a Guru Meditation error in a single spot, broken images could be causing it as I found out)
Any crashes
Optional:
Grammar, spelling, or other missing characters.
What has not been tested:
Anything not long after the morning of the first twilight
Tea Party
Secret
Some major revisions were made before the first twilight so those could use rechecking
Sound effects are kinda weird right now as VNDS does not support playing multiple sounds at once. Sometimes the rain sound effect will get knocked out of the buffer by a knock sound effect or something similar. I could probably implement something for this some other time but it's not at the top of my list.
Umineko has some really long lines which go over the 500 character limit if you don't follow the same clicking points as the PC version, so sometimes you have to click in weird places. Report any weirdness that might've resulted from this but I don't consider this a bug as it plays like the PC version.
Download (main, without sounds): http://www.mediafire.com/?3yx0mmiuot4
Download (sounds): http://www.mediafire.com/?tbndl4dng2x
I plan to require Episode 1 for future episode releases to cut down on space. These downloads will give you all resources except BGMs required for Episode 2 and above. Future downloads should in the 50mb area.
>>10
I also forgot to mention that the only screen effect displayed is the rain. The clock doesn't have graphics right now but will display a message like "Time: 0600" when it clock changes. I'll try to add in the clock sometime later.
>Broken images (if you constantly get a Guru Meditation error in a single spot, broken images could be causing it as I found out)
Do you still have one of those images? -- I want to try and find out why the program crashes.
Hey Nagato, thanks for the awesome work so far!
And a small favor please. Could you upload that to Megaupload or Rapidshare or anywhere else other than MF or SS? >_>
Has anyone managed to get the sound effects with the japanese filenames to play? I've installed them to the correct directories but VNDS doesn't seem to recognise them.
>>16
your best bet's probably to rename them just like what was done in fsn.
stupid japs, can't even follow standards.
A portable Umineko would be excellent... just finished the first part on PC. Good luck with it!
good luck also!
Hmm, probably a stupid question but, what should we rename them to?
>>20
anything.
numbers. google/babelfish translated titles. random jumble of letters. whatever you want.
batch rename to numbers, then it doesn't take a long time to rename them all
Is this still being worked on, by the way?
i doubt it since nagato if i remember right lost interest in porting
That's a pity, from what I remember a lot of work was done on it, and the translation of the 4th episode was recently completed, as well as translation fixes to the 1st one.
That said, I'm not sure how the whole red and blue text issue would've worked with VNDS.
please continue with this!
Bump for 2
lol, "Bump for 2" when its the same guy
If I had the tools, I could probably try it. Wish I knew what nagato did.
Im very sad to see this project down. I guess im just one of the useless masses who arent experienced in this... :/ If anyone would be willing to take this up then theyd have my thanks. :p
Just for a positive word, i have to say that VNDS is by far my favorite homebrew!
well it'd be easier if it was possible to use colored text. right now it only has white for past text and blue for curently displayed text, so no specific red text or blue text lines are possible.
sure, ep1 didn't use that but i'd prefer to port ep3. delicious virgilia.
Are the different text colours necesary? Infact even if it is, why not add e.g "(Blue)" in text in front of a line supposed to be dictated in blue? Im not sure how manual this all is so it could become more time consuming than it already is. :/ Ive only played through the first ep, so im a novice at umineko so if what im saying is kinda pointless then just say, and ill moan with the rest of you :p (jkin)
someone got colored text working(theres code to do it, just not a script command to change it).
but it wasn`t in .patch form so I ignored it
>>32
Yes, the colors are necessary and that ($color) stuff gets confusing real fast, especially with sentences that have mixed red and white.
Meh, :/ I think i understand the problem better now, pity. T_T
A umineko converter has been released
http://weeaboo.nl/index.php?aid=28
Any attempts to convert Umineko during the mp3 conversion are met with errors and the program freezes. This was done on a fresh Episode 4 copy with the Witch Hunt patch just added. Repeated 3 times and several others have had the same problems.
I have the same problem. Posting a picture with the "Cannot run program ffmpeg" error, in case that may be related.
[v1.0.1]
http://www.mediafire.com/?n2nzmzmdujt
http://rapidshare.com/files/297824504/UminekoConverter-1.0.1-win32.7z
The program was looking for ffmpeg/lame/faac in the wrong folder.
Any chance something similar would work with the PC version of Higurashi, what with the commercial translation in the pipeline? (and the first EP already fan-traslated)
I put the converted umineko folder inside the vnds/novels directory but the program doesn't detect the novel. What am l doing wrong?
Darn xD I don't have the PC version of Higurashi so I can't convert it.
>>39
anoNL, you're alive and kicking again?!
Good to hear that!
So what is that VNDSx 1.4.8 version on your site?
Is it the dream version we had been waiting for, combining all good aspects from 1.4.7 and 1.5.3?
Not quite, blank lines of text are broken and the save/load menu is crashy.
Can you please add an 256kbit option to the converter?128kbit is kinda low for maximum quality.
>>45
the ds will probably die trying to decode that.
>>42
You can get it from here: http://sonozakifutagotachi.blogspot.com/2008/04/acquiring-our-releases.html
It's just the translated first ep, but it shouldn't be that much different from Umineko.
Also, out of curiosity, has anyone tried using it with EP5 yet?
>>44
So should I upgrade or keep my 1.4.7 until the next release?
>>48
Why not keep both on your card at the same time? It's not like another megabyte will hurt, is it?
WOW great work!
Thanks alot for this, works like a charm.
Nice to have you back anoNL.
VNDS always crashes on me once I get to a particular line in the first episode. Am I the only one to have encountered this?
>>49
As far as I know, there can only be one VNDS directory at a time, so that switching between them would at least require changing the folder names each time. Also I'm not sure if just linking the novel directories works out. Surely you know a method to avoid having to duplicate each novel into the second VNDS directory, since that would "hurt" for sure, in terms of megabyte.
Please elaborate your suggestion accordingly.
>>52
Have both .nds executables named differently, and keep them in the same folder/merge the old vnds folder with the new one? It shouldn't hurt, since there won't be de-constructive file conflicts.
anoNL back.
Glad to hear that!
Uhm, I've got a problem, the links posted by Nagato in post n°10 aren't working anymore... anyone could re-upload the files?;_;"
And just to know... any progress with the other episodes?^^
Hey...It's gonna be a long post XD I had converted english patched umineko ep4...The converter progam run just fine and finished convertion...It generated 3 diffrent folders - "umineko" (29kb), _generated(289mb) and _orginal(4gb @__@)...well since umineko folder was kind of empty and _orginal was too big for my sd card to handle I uploaded _generated flie (The only diffrence between this and umineko folder was that there wasn't a save folder and there where actualy graphic and sound files in folders). VNDS detected the novel and the main menu with the choises of the episodes worked just fine but when I chose any episode I got a bug report "Unable to open script file: script/umil-opning.1.scr" I looked into the scrpit folder and there are only two files there - folder "special" and "main" file...
well...how should it look like? Did I do something wrong? Anyone?
About that previous post...I run convertion again but this time I have read the Script Convert report...it appears that program has trobbule conveting script...can comeone upload a good script folder if it isn't a problem? ;]
Early EP5 build:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1SXGL2L0
i have another glitch , my ds freeze after a few lines but i can use the main menu to jump everywhere background slideshows and characters seems to work fine
>>60
Fixed, there is a mistake in the foreground .zip created by the 1.03,it puts everything in a subfolder
Can someone upload the ep1-4 script, everything else converts just fine, but when it gets to extracting the script, i get a java error :(
Or possibly tell me how to fix my problem? :x
It says something about the script file not being found or something :x
Its the same error that the other person posted about. :x Anyone?
"something about the script file not being found or something" is not really helping much.
Do /_original/script/nscript.dat and /_generated/_temp.scr exist?
No, I'll run the converter again and post a screenie of the error itself
Here's a picture of the error
"C:\Program Files\07th_Expansion\Umineko4\nscript.dat" appears to be missing.
This tells me two things:
Your Umineko install seems to be broken/modified/unreadable in some way. Doing a clean install should fix the problem.
I reinstalled and now I'm getting a new error, which i will include in this post. What directory do i set the converter to find the game, in the actual folder, or the patch folder. Any help will be appreciated.
Okay
I think I may have found my problem. The folder I had containing WH's patch wasn't named "[WH] Umineko English". Converting now, I'll post again if its not successful this time around. Thanks for the help.
I just tried again and got the same error -_-. Can someone please just upload ep4 for me. Or just the script files. I've been at this since I finished 'End of the golden witch' and to no avail.
>>75
v1.0.5 download was of a broken test version, whoops...
Try redownloading the converter:
http://www.mediafire.com/?2maxgzmu5tm
Just tested a clean convert and it seems to actually work now.
Okay,I'll give it a go again.
Here's the new error that I'm getting ._.
That's still the broken test version.
Also, you're converting Umineko-Chiru now?
I downloaded the one you linked me to. And I figured that I would try Chiru since alliance hasn't been working for me, but Chiru is a no-go as well. So...which converter should I be using now?._.
Btw, I just ran converter 1.0.3 again, trying to convert ep4, and got this error again.
Simple check to see if you're using the version from >>76
The text file exists, that line isn't in the text file though. Should I post whats in it?
And as I said, that error came with version 1.0.3, not the one you posted, since you said that the one you posted was a beta of some sort. Sorry for all of the double posts by the way.
Use http://www.mediafire.com/?2maxgzmu5tm (see >>76).
Clean the _generated folder before converting.
When the _generated folder is recreated by the converter it should contain these text files:
_generated/namemapping-background.txt ~149KB
_generated/namemapping-foreground.txt ~197KB
_generated/namemapping-sound.txt ~8.56KB
I don't know if that will do any good, seeing as how whenever the conversion fails, i whipe the folder of its contents before attempting again :S. but I'll try again.
And before deleting it, I just noticed that there is only one text file, and that is "namemapping.txt but I'm guessing 1.0.5 does the conversion differently or something? Guess I'll find out.
Same error as before. I don't think the converter is making those text files that you're speaking of. Here's a screenshot again.
>I don't think the converter is making those text files that you're speaking of.
If it creates a _generated/namemapping.txt file you're using the wrong version.
If it creates nothing the program must have already printed an error earlier.
When I used the 1.0.5 converter, it created the three files you spoke of, so now I know that I'm using the correct converter. However, the file sizes aren't the same you listed, I don't know if that means anything or not. All three files are 4KB, so I'm assuming something is missing in them or something. But the files are indeed here, any other idea for what the problem may be?:(
I'm having the same error when it converts the script,it's a clean install and i already converted with 1.0.4 without too much problems.
Is there a way to not convert the pictures again?
Just to check:
I don't know about Chiru, but when I'm doing ep1-4, my _original folder comes out to only 1.03gb
Hi anon , i have successfully converted umineko ep1-4 (with the latest patcher) , but i don't know what to do with the various files that i got now , should i include them in the vnds directory or do they work independently ?
I'm going to reinstall again then. I'll post the results again. Thank you for all of your help so far by the way.
I'm going to reinstall again then. I'll post the results again. Thank you for all of your help so far by the way.
I'm about ready to give up, I did another fresh reinstall from my disk, same error appears, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I guess all I can really do is wait and hope someone posts a pre-converted batch of ep1-4, since nothing I've done seemed to fix the problem. If anyone would be kind enough to do that it would be greatly appreciated ._.
A valid Umineko-Chiru install should look like this
293 files, 1.91GB
Mines has all of that. Also, I played through episodes 1-5 flawlessly on my PC, leading me to believe that there is nothing wrong with my install :s. I replay specific parts daily, so I know currently that banquet-end of the golden witch function properly. So I'm really at a loss at this point :(
Okay, I finally sucessfully converted episodes 1-4 (yay me). Now on to Chiru lol.
there are problems with butterflies in ep 1 and 3 and ep3 crashes fairly often
also some problems with red text
i'll give more detailed informations when i get the time
(i have the exact lines where it crashes)+screeshots
Could someone upload just the converted scripts for EP1-4 and EP5 somewhere? Everything else converts just fine, but for some reason it won't convert the scripts won't, even though everything is in the correct directories.
