Narcissu problem & FSN question (23)

1 Name: Anonymous : 2009-07-19 00:47 ID:9e7d4pjh [Del]

It seems like Narcissu's novel + sound doesn't even appear among my vnds' loading list. The one without sound loads just fine, although the other novels I've tried works with sound no problem. I'm tempted to try it unzipped, but I'm running all of this on Windows, so you know, with the upper-case/lower-case prob ...
Which leads me to my FSN question.

I've got the same problem from this thread -
http://digital-haze.net/ch/vnds/kareha.pl/1244431636/l50

  • namely, it loads to 100% and freezes on that loading screen.

And the solution to that is barred by my upper-case/lower-case roadblock again.

So... Upper-case/lower-case prob.
Am I up a certain creek without a paddle?

The solution to FSN was there on the last 2 posts of the thread you pointed. It works on with windows and anywhere else with the upper-case/lower-case problem.

  1. get http://digital-haze.net/files/vnds/novels/fate/fate-1.0.tar.gz
  2. get http://digital-haze.net/files/vnds/novels/fate/sound.zip
  3. get http://digital-haze.net/files/vnds/novels/fate/fate-sound.tar.gz
  4. extract fate-1.0.tar.gz somewhere
  5. enter the .../fate/ directory you created
  6. to make the transfer to the sd card easier and faster, right click the background folder (looking at the .../fate/ directory) and zip it using the "store" compression option to background.zip
  7. repeat step 6 for the script and foreground directories naming them script.zip and foreground.zip
  8. put the sound.zip you downloaded in the .../fate/ directory too
  9. extract fate-sound.tar.gz into your .../fate/ directory, so it creates a .../fate/sound/ directory with all the music
  10. remove the background, foreground and script directories (so the remaining files in the .../fate/ directory are: /save/ directory, /sound/ directory, background.zip, default.ttf, foreground.zip, icon.png, info.txt, script.zip, sound.zip and thumbnail.png)
  11. copy that folder to your ../vnds/novels/ folder in micro sd (it took me about 5 minutes on a slow usb - not 2.0)
  12. test it and see if it works now

Okay, I got a friend's mac to unzip FSN zips and it seems to work. I'll have a play through to make sure everything's fine.

But narcissu-sound-r5.novel still doesn't appear as an option to load although the one without sound does. I suppose when I'm able to, I'll try unzipping it as well.

Does anyone know if the quality of the r4 or how much space is left on it might create a problem?

Have you tried uncompressing the novel? Seems like the bulk of my problems are solved by uncompressing them.

Btw, are .novel formats synonymous with .tar.gz? I thought I read something about it but I couldn't find the thread that mentioned it.
In either case, I've been renaming and uncompressing the novels I've dled, and it seems like the trade-off for larger filesizes for instant loading and seemingly faster saving/loading saves seems to be worth it.

I tried the above method and I have no images on the top screen, I am getting sound though.

Are you sure you zipped the files with the compression level "store only"?

Make sure you're zipping the whole directory, not just the files in it. Also check if they're correctly named.

Hmm.. I had the same problem but I managed to get it working I think.

I dl'd both the sound and non-sound versions of Narcissu. Simply extracting the sound version made no images appear on the top screen.. so I extracted the non-sound version which worked completely fine on its own and just copied its whole contents and overwriten it on the sound version.

This seems to have fixed it, leading me to wonder if the images from the sound version are corrupted or not.

I'm using Vista, and I don't see any "store" option. What should I do?

I'm pretty sure winrar works for all versions of windows (at least the ones I care about) and vista...so no, you aren't supposed to use the zip/unzip that comes with microsoft.

Of course, this information can be found on the wiki (as long as those friggin spam change it...) and you just have to kind of realize it. This would be the how to "store":
".novel format is simply all of the files needed for a visual novel ported to VNDS stored in a single file and can be made by using winrar (or anything similar) to "store" (not compress)the main folder and thus no space is actually saved, although the novel is supposedly easier to access."

How do you uncompress a .novel file...?

So after I've done all the steps listed, there is no .novel files, so how do I actually load the game?

So I got FSN working, but I have another question:

How do I view the in-game menu? Like the stuff with character info and stuff (does it even exist in this form?)

I'm confused about how to uncompress a .novel. Do I just load it with winzip?

You just rename the .novel into .zip and unpack it whith WinRAR, WinZip, 7z or whatever you use

I've had to uncompress everyone of the VN's I've downloaded so far. I'm thinking there could be other factors at work that the dev team hasn't considered, such as hardware differences betweenst the various flashcart devices.

I've both of Datel's products. Datel Max Media Dock (CF) and the Datel Game'n Music (Micro SD). For both, I have had to unzip the files in order for the VNDS program to be able to see them.
